Sally Maxwell

BIOGRAPHY

Although she enjoys a long professional career already, Sally  is just really getting started.  Her earliest works were published as open edition prints by Able Art over 25 years ago under the name Sally Miller, placing her at the head of the colored scratchboard art movement.  Signed and numbered prints were then published by Rennaissant Gallery Prints, and distributed Internationally.  Collector plates and figurines followed for the next 12 years.  Her collectibles are distributed through gift shops and galleries worldwide, as well as by the Danbury Mint.

A divorce, move to Texas and a new husband (16 years) have inspired a new direction in her life, as well as given her a new name.   The wildlife she always loved has become a reality with her new home in the countryside.  Sally and George enjoy their own herd of deer that come to their feeder each night, as well as all sorts of woodland creatures which inhabit the same surroundings as they.  With their children all grown and on their own, they are able to travel, to fish, to hunt in many more places than before.

Sally's area of specialty is her beloved wildlife, but she is not limited to just that.  Domestic animals, birds and floral subjects as well as fantasy or abstract pieces show up periodically.  The fine detail that can be achieved in scratchboard lends itself to the fur and feathers that are so lifelike in her work.  No one can yet match her work.

Several years ago, Sally began working with Claybord Black and with Claybord White, a new concept in scratchboard.  She has developed over 26 scratchboard art kits for Ampersand, Claybord's  manufacturer, which are marketed through retailers such as Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, etc.  She filmed a "how to" video for them, and does workshops all over the nation on scratchboard.  As part of this passing on of her experience, she has written 3 booklets on drawing   which can also be found at most craft stores nationwide.

The addition of Claybord White has opened new challenges, and Sally is busy experimenting with a new softer technique on it and on the black.   Voluptuous flowers  from her garden are showing up in her portfolio.   Watch for these new things as well as other new textures.
